Hiring an employee can be an expensive business, and with the costs incurred often adding up to as much as £10,000 it’s vital that the right decision has been made. That’s where thorough employee background checks come in. Unfortunately, a lot of people underestimate just how important background checks can be, and that can be a severe mistake. In this day and age not everyone is who they say they are, and people have a tendency to be less than honest.

An employee background check will make absolutely sure that the candidate is the one for the job. Their past will be thoroughly delved into, including their education and employment history, ensuring that they were completely truthful on their CV. CV embellishment is all too common, whether that’s someone saying they’ve had the experience when they haven’t or even if they’ve had past convictions that they haven’t disclosed, and unless checks are undertaken, including criminal records checks, there’s no way of being 100% sure that they’re telling the truth.

Conducting background checks will not only ensure that the candidate can be trusted, but also that they’re the one for the job. Managers can hire that person safe in the knowledge that they’ve made the right decision, giving them complete peace of mind that they’re not going to lose out. The financial benefits are also worth considering, as to lose £10,000 just through hiring the wrong person is bound to hit any business particularly hard in this climate. Then there are further costs if it turns out that the candidate wasn’t eligible to work in the UK, and if they had criminal convictions then the business is liable to even more financial losses.

So, conducting employee background checks really is vitally important. Failing to do so could result in severe financial losses as well as wasted time and effort, so all businesses would be well advised to invest in thorough employment screening before anyone is allowed to enter their employment.
