Everyone has at least once been faced with standard topographic maps - whether at school at geography lessons, or while travelling. A panoramic map can be regarded as a picture of the landscape. From time to time it is also called a perspective since it portrays a certain area as it's viewed from a certain point in space. These maps are very accurate about dimensions, but on the other hand, different individual objects are scarcely distinguishable or even not distinguishable at all. Such kind of maps is widespread in certain branches like ski resorts pictures.
As for pictorial map this type is concentrated on the details, but not at keeping precise dimensions. Individual objects are portrayed with their distinguishing features and, accordingly, are easily recognizable. On the other hand, distances do not always correspond to the reality, form time to time the landscape can be slightly reduced or distorted as the stress is placed on the representation of objects. The given kind of maps enjoys wide popularity because of their nice appearance, informative filling and easiness in use. In spite of scale distortions they are excellent for navigating while planning a tour or looking for a certain place.
